Chain of Rocks Bridge

Most people see the Chain of Rocks Bridge, while driving the world famous Route 66, as the bridge crosses the Mississippi river. The bridge has a very distinct 22 degree bend, in the middle, that gave truck and bus drivers a few surprises during it’s active years.

The bridge was opened in 1929, and closed for traffic in 1970.
Today it can only be enjoyed by foot or on bicycle.

Chain of Rocks Park

Between 1927 and 1978, there was an amusement park next to the west end of the bridge.
Today every trace of the park is gone, and the area is covered with private homes..

The St Louis Waterworks intakes

Beside the river you can see two gorgeous structures, where the St Louis Waterworks has built two intakes.

Unfortunately the beautiful bridge has also been known for a less glamorous event, when it was a part of a grizzly double homicide, when two sisters were murdered there in 1991
